Volunteer work is essential for a young person to learn humility, self-less service, and to recognize they are of use in the world. It also connects them to the community and connects the community to them. Through community service they learn more about themselves, and more about the world around them. Huskie’s Heroes requires a minimum of 72 hours of community service per trimester.
Ideally, though not required, the class would commit to volunteering together at one place for a semester, and then switch to somewhere else for the next semester, etc. This would help to build community and comradery within the class. Collaboration and support for these hours occurs during our biweekly class.
